THE LAST THING HE WANTED (2020)
The Last Thing He Wanted is a 2020 British-American political thriller film directed by Dee Rees based on the book of the same name by Joan Didion, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1996. A screenplay by Rees and Marco Villalobos. It stars Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, Rosie Perez, Edi Gathegi, Mel Rodriguez, Toby Jones and Willem Dafoe.
It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2020. The film met a tepid response during its screening on the evening of February 1 of the festival with sparse claps. It is scheduled to be released on February 21, 2020, by Netflix.
The story centers around Elena McMahon, a reporter for the Washington Post who quits her job covering the 1984 United States presidential election to care for her father after her mother’s death. In an unusual turn of events, she inherits his position as an arms dealer for the U.S. Government in Central America. In this sparsely written, quick paced narrative, Elena struggles to cope with the spies, American military personnel, and the consequences of her father’s errors that are waiting for her on a small island off the coast of Costa Rica.
